Window film for tower glare, privacy and storefront safety

Film is a sheet bonded to the room side of your existing glass. It can cut glare, add privacy or help broken glass hold together. This page is about buildings, not car tint. We connect you with an independent local film installer, who checks the glass and quotes the job. Film sits alongside our other window services.

  • Glare and privacy film for suites and homes
  • Security film for storefronts
  • Board and glass checks first

Types of film

What film can do: glare, privacy, UV, heat and safety

Solar and glare film

Tones down bright sun and some of its heat. Darker and reflective films do more, but change the look from outside.

Privacy and decorative film

Frosted or patterned film works day and night. One-way film works only while it's brighter outside than in.

UV film

Nearly clear film that cuts the ultraviolet light that fades floors.

Security film

A thicker clear film that holds broken glass together. The glass still breaks; the film keeps it in place.

Condo suites

Condo towers: ask the board before applying film

West-facing glass or a neighbour's windows across the way are the usual reasons a suite owner asks about film. Before anything goes on, find out whose glass it is.

Ontario condo windows are typically common elements that the corporation owns and maintains, and boards keep the outside of the building uniform. Tinted or reflective film changes how glass looks from the street.

If an owner alters common elements, the board generally has to approve it first. Whether interior film counts is for your board to say, so ask the management office and tell them the film type and its colour from outside. In a City Centre tower, expect the question. Our condo owners' page explains the approval path.

Houses and townhouses

Homes: bathrooms, street-facing windows, sunrooms

In a house, film is mostly about privacy and sun. Frosted film on a bathroom window or sidelight gives privacy without new glass.

Solar film helps most in sunrooms and on big south or west windows. Ask how it looks at night: some films that are private by day turn see-through once the lights are on. Film can't clear haze trapped between two panes; that's a job for foggy window repair.

Businesses

Storefronts and offices: security, decorative and glare film

Security film on storefronts

A clear, heavy film on the room side can slow entry and keep shards off the floor. If the glass is already broken, storefront glass repair comes first.

Decorative and privacy film

Frosted bands, patterns and cut lettering give privacy in offices and mark glass doors so people see them.

Glare film on office glass

Window-walls and curtain walls can take solar film, but the owner or manager decides and the glass must be checked. See curtain wall glass.

Before it goes on

Film on sealed units: what the installer checks

Film changes how much heat the glass absorbs, so check before you change the glass.

Glass type

Tinted, coated or very large units can be sensitive. The installer matches the film to the glass.

Warranty

Some glass warranties limit coverage once film is applied. Find your paperwork, or ask the management office.

Condition

Film won't hide fog between the panes or fix a crack. Deal with those first.

Price factors

What affects the price

  • The area of glass and number of panes
  • Film type: solar, privacy, decorative, UV or security
  • Access: a tower suite, a tall storefront or a ladder job
  • Removing old film first
  • Custom patterns or lettering

Say which windows get the sun or face the neighbours

Send a photo and say whether it's a suite, a house or a business. We'll pass it to an independent local film installer for a quote. In a condo, have the management office's answer on film before the visit.
