Door glass · Mississauga

Replacing the glass in a door, sidelight or transom

The glass in a front door sits in a frame of its own. In most doors that frame opens, and the glass is changed while the door stays hung. Most sidelights and transoms work the same way. If the door is solid and closes well, changing only the glass is usually the simpler job. In a condo townhouse, ask management before changing how the front door looks. We connect you with an independent local glass pro who replaces door glass and can say what's possible for your door.

  • Inserts, sidelights and transoms
  • Safety glass where it's required
  • The door stays; only the glass changes

Each piece of glass here can be replaced on its own.

Fog, cracks, privacy

Privacy, decorative and fogged insert glass

Fog inside an insert or sidelight

Haze between the layers means the seal has failed, as in a foggy window. It won't wipe off. The glass unit is replaced; the door and its frame stay.

A crack or a break

Keep people clear, photograph it for insurance, and cover it from outside. The broken glass steps cover the first hour.

Too clear, or dated

Frosted, textured or decorative glass adds privacy to a front hall. Send a photo of the door and the frame size so the pro can suggest options that fit.

What can be swapped

Inserts, sidelights and transoms: what can be swapped

Storm door panes have their own page, storm doors. For the rest of the entry:

Door inserts

Most steel and fibreglass doors hold the glass in a two-part frame screwed together through the door. The frame comes apart and a new insert of the same size goes in.

Sidelights

The tall glass beside the door is usually a sealed unit or an insert in its own frame, replaced without touching the door.

Transoms

The glass above the door is often a single pane or sealed unit held by stops. Older decorative transoms set in wood need more care.

Safety glass

Safety glass: when tempered or laminated is required

Ontario's Building Code calls for safety glass, tempered or laminated, in storm doors, sliding doors and sidelights that could be mistaken for a door. Large glass that reaches low on an entrance door is covered too. The pro orders to the rule for your piece and checks it against the current code.

Tempered

Heat-treated to break into small, blunt pieces. It can't be cut afterwards, so it's made to the exact size.

Laminated

Two sheets bonded to a clear plastic layer. It cracks but stays in the frame, which makes a break-in slower.

Heritage entrances

Heritage entrances in Port Credit and Meadowvale Village

The Old Port Credit Village plan asks owners to conserve doors, glazing and door surrounds on the front of the house. The Meadowvale Village plan asks for original doors to be kept, and door work that follows it needs a Clearance to Alter. Both lean toward keeping what's there, so ask about repairing an original door first. Check with City heritage staff, and see our heritage village guide.

What affects the quote

Pricing door glass: what the quote follows

Door glass is made to size, so the quote follows the piece:

  • Size and shape of the insert, sidelight or transom
  • Clear, frosted, textured or decorative glass
  • Tempered or laminated, single pane or sealed unit
  • How it's held: an insert frame, stops, or glass set in wood
  • Whether a matching decorative pattern is still made

Photograph the door from outside and inside, with a tape measure across the glass.

Inside the house

Cabinet and furniture door glass

Cabinet and bookcase doors usually hold a single pane with clips or a bead, replaced with clear, frosted or textured glass cut to size. For shelves and tabletops, see custom glass; for other doors, the doors and screens page.
