Vinyl and hybrid frames: where they fit and where they do not
Most homes in the city were built between the 1960s and 2000, and a new window for one of them will most likely have a vinyl, or PVC, frame. It isn't always the answer in the two heritage villages, and in a condo the board decides how the outside looks. We match you with an independent local installer who prices vinyl and hybrid replacement windows and says where each suits your home.

Why vinyl
Why vinyl is the usual pick for 1960s–2000s houses
Much of that stock is now at the age for foggy glass and tired cranks.
Vinyl needs no painting, is made to size, and comes in every common style. It isn't all alike, though: frame depth, reinforcement and hardware vary, so ask what's inside the frame.
Not every tired window needs a new frame. A worn operator on a vinyl casement window or one fogged sealed unit can be fixed on its own.
Other frames
Hybrid and composite frames
Hybrid
A vinyl or wood core with a different face, often aluminum outside for colour and slimmer lines. It suits houses where exterior colour or sightlines matter.
Composite and fibreglass
Stiffer than vinyl, so frames can be narrower. Often chosen for dark colours and large openings.
Wood
Still the expected material for street-facing windows in Meadowvale Village. See the heritage notes below.
Colour
Colours, black exteriors and painting vinyl
White and almond are the traditional vinyl colours. Black and dark exteriors come from a factory coating or a coloured cap. Dark frames get hotter in direct sun, so ask how the product handles a south or west wall.
Existing vinyl can be painted; the FAQ below covers the catches. In a condo, colour is usually the board's decision.
Labels
What the labels tell you: ENERGY STAR and NAFS
Claims such as "energy-efficient" should rest on these labels, not on the frame material.
ENERGY STAR
Canada's ENERGY STAR specification uses one national bar, based on the U-factor or Energy Rating, with no climate zones. It's also what Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program looks for; check its current rules.
NAFS rating
The Ontario Building Code expects manufactured windows rated under the North American Fenestration Standard with its Canadian supplement. The label shows a performance class and grades. Match it to the model on your quote.
Check before you change
Where vinyl may not fit: heritage villages and condo rules
Meadowvale Village
The district plan wants original wood windows kept wherever that's feasible. Any replacement keeps clear, colourless glass and muntins faced in wood, and a new storm window has to be wood. Windows the street can't see may be other materials. Guideline work needs a quick Clearance to Alter.
Old Port Credit Village
The district plan favours keeping the original sash, frames and glass, and discourages changing an opening's size or type. Our heritage village guide covers both districts.
Condos: uniform appearance
In most Ontario condos, windows are common elements and boards keep the same colour, style and grille pattern throughout, townhouses included. An owner's change needs board approval first. Start with the management office and our condo owners' page.
Price factors
What affects the price
- Frame: vinyl, hybrid or composite
- Colour, especially dark or two-tone
- Style and size of each window
- Double or triple glass, and coatings
- Retrofit or full-frame install
- The number of windows and upstairs access
Tell us how many windows and what styles you have. A photo of each side of the house helps.

Count your windows and note their styles
Say whether it's a house, townhouse or condo, how many windows, and the styles you have. We'll send it to an independent local installer who works with both frame types. If some windows only need new glass, ask for that price too.
