Screen doors that slide, swing and close properly again

A screen door is a moving part, and it wears like one. On a sliding screen, the rollers and the light frame go first; on a hinged one, the closer, hinges and latch. Most are repairs. We connect you with an independent local pro who repairs and makes screen doors. Roll-away screens have their own page, retractable screens.

The frame is straight, so this one needs new mesh, not a new door.

Start with the door

Which screen door do you have?

Patio screen on a house

The screen beside a glass slider on a house or townhouse. Rollers, frame and latch, covered below.

Balcony sliding screen

A torn or missing screen on a tower balcony door is a real job: a new mosquito-mesh screen can be made for the existing track. Ask management about frame colour first.

Hinged screen door

A screen door that swings, usually at a front or side entry. If it has glass panels too, see storm doors.

Sliding screens

When a sliding screen won't stay in its track

A sliding screen runs on small spring-loaded rollers at the top and bottom of its frame. When a roller breaks or its spring weakens, the screen rattles, drags or drops out. New rollers and a height adjustment usually fix it.

The frame is light, and one knock can bow it. A bowed frame binds and pops out; some can be straightened, others are replaced. Latches and pulls are separate parts. Heavy rain washes grit into the lower track, so clean it before blaming the rollers.

Hinged screens

When a hinged screen door sags, slams or won't latch

Pet doors

Adding a pet door to a screen door

A framed pet flap can be set into the lower mesh of most sliding or hinged screen doors, with the edges secured so the mesh doesn't tear around it. If claws are the real problem, pair it with pet-resistant mesh on the lower panel.

Fix or replace

Fix the parts or replace the screen door?

Repair when the frame is straight. Replace when it is bent, cracked at the corners or its parts are no longer made; a new frame can cost less than chasing old parts. If it's the glass door beside the screen that drags, see sliding door repair.

What affects the quote

What a screen door job is priced on

  • Sliding or hinged, and the size of the door
  • Whether rollers, closers or latches are still made for it
  • Mesh: standard, pet-resistant, fine or privacy
  • Add-ons such as a pet door or kick panel
  • Made to measure or a stock size

A photo of the whole screen door and a close-up of its track or hinges shows most of what a pro needs.

Odd sizes

Custom-size screen doors

Re-framed side doors and unusual patio door widths may not match a stock screen. A pro can make a sliding or hinged screen door to measure, with the frame colour matched where possible. For window screens, see window screen repair; other door jobs are on the doors and screens page.

Send a photo of the screen door and its track

Show the whole door and a close-up of the track or hinges. We pass it to a local pro who repairs screen doors, and they'll quote rollers, a closer or a new frame, whichever it needs.
